Intermediate Championship
Our seniors had an away day to Toome for round one of the championship series on Sunday. It would take a strong step up in form to overcome Toome, however a disastrous start had the ball in the net before we could catch breath. A quick steadying of the troops and we were back in touch with a couple of points and it wasn’t long before we got our own goal to go a point in front. It became a very tight affair, but Toome were more economical with their scoring opportunities and as the half drew to a close, a soul destroying second goal for the home team, deflated our spirits and the heavens opened with rain. Our four point deficit suddenly became seven as Toome stuck in another goal minutes after the restart. From this early stage we were playing catch up and we became vulnerable to turnovers and subsequent scores as we went in search of goals. Things just wouldn’t click for the final touch or pass, and our chances went astray. Another goal compounded our misery, and eventually Toome finished nine points clear of us. We regroup once again for the visit of Carrickmacross on Saturday evening at 7pm for round two.
U17’s
Our 17’s bowed out of the league campaign in Cremartin on Tuesday night. It wasn’t a night for the faint-hearted with a no holds barred affair. While our first half was bright and confident, we still trailed by two points at the break. Our injury list soon became evident on the resumption and the players committed performance began show cracks in the armour. We were forced to carry off a number of players from the battle. While every effort was made by the on field players to punish with scores, it just wasn’t enough and our clash was lost. It was a huge display of determination without reward, but what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger and the lads will now evaluate the injuries, get back to training and prepare for a successful championship.
