Junior Championship
All good things comes to he who waits. Never was a phrase so apt for our Junior Championship encounter with Toome on Saturday last. The years of despair and disappointment were quickly forgotten as our Captain, Paraic McGuirk , proudly held aloft the Liam Stirrat Cup for the first time. The Seans were clearly the underdogs for the day having suffered a substantial tanning in St Victors Park in the league. Undeterred by past results, The Seans laid their stall out very early and took a five points to one lead to the first water break. This, unbeknownst to our loyal following , would be a lead that that they would only build on and not relinquish. With stand-out performances, all over the park, the efforts of every player contributed to a confident and assured display for sixty minutes. Adam O’Driscoll exhibited the finer skills of point taking through out the game which earned him the man of the match accolade. To be fair there were any number of players that could have taken the award given their own personal performances. In the end, victory was sealed early in the second half with goals that gave the lads the cushion to see out the win. A game won in the preparation and executed with military precession on the sticky Ballybay turf. This victory marked a resilience for many of the team to keep coming back from their final defeats of recent years. On the final whistle, a sharp sigh of relief could be seen evaporating into the evening air. There was lots of hugging, laughing and recalling pervious victories by the crowd as the swell entered the field. As is customary now, grown men were permitted to cry, as the reality of the teams achievement and the passion of the following became clear. Eventually we managed to get Paraic McGuirk to the rostrum to accept the inaugural presentation of the Liam Stirrat Cup. Paraic accurately described the feeling that everyone was experiencing, and it was good. All the hard work, wet nights, Gary Larkin shouting, Conor McElvaney orchestrating , Mickey McMahon delegating and Niall McGuirk taking it all in, had been so worth it, and the cup was ours. A hearty congratulations to all the players and management for their unreserved commitment to the cause. Commiserations to Toome but I feel this will not be the last encounter for both of these teams in the near future. A championship every thirty one years may not be what you could call consistent but when it does come around, and you grab it, and the feeling is immeasurable. An Ulster campaign waits in the wings and hopefully we can give a good account of ourselves at provincial level. In the meantime they will savour the win and may indulge themselves for a day or so purely to unwind. Well done to all.
