Junior Championship
The senior squad were the visitors in St Tiarnachs Park on Sunday where they took on Clones in the Junior Championship. This was a table topping clash that would see the winners climb to the summit of their championship group. It was bright start by both teams with the early exchange of points and Clones advancing slightly. However a goal by the Seans cancelled the home sides lead. Points were tagged on as our lads began to control the zones all over the park. The interval revitalised their appetite and it brought another goal and a brace of points. We enjoyed good spells of dominance and turnovers which eventually lead to our third goal. Clones took a couple of conciliation scores in the closing minutes but the result was secure by eight points. We now face Drumhowan on Sunday evening at home to conclude the fixtures and make way for the quarter final draws.
Juveniles
If it could go wrong on Friday night last than it did go wrong in Corduff. The U15’s were facing into the semi final away from home, under floodlights for the first time and minus three starting players. Could it get any worse…? Yes it could. After seven short minutes of the first half a brave attempt to save a goal by Odhran Connolly resulted in a horrific clash with the opposing forward. In a totally innocuous challenge both players lay motionless on the ground after the collision. As the mentors from both teams attended the players it was clear they were quite distressed. Our club would sincerely like the thank John Rafferty from Corduff who gave first aid to Odhran on the pitch as well as their own player. We would also like to offer a special thanks to Majella Callan from Corduff who was on hand to supply anything that was needed for the injured goalkeeper before he headed for hospital. After what seemed like an hour, the game restarted albeit on a sombre note, there was still a job to be done. Corduff were much stronger in the first half and punished our lack of concentration with scores. Half time came and our boys regrouped with a nine point deficit to face. But cometh the hour cometh the men and our lads grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck and laid it on thick with score after score without reply from the throw in. In a comeback , not seen since Lazarus was a juvenile, we had now managed to be two pints to the good as the clocked ticked down. However, our great resurgence was suddenly halted as Corduff hit three frees to edge in front with time nearly up. Try as they might, they couldn’t scrape anymore scores and the energy sapping soul destroying evening had taken its toll. Defeat by a single point was to be the result and our aspirations of reaching two finals evaporated in the cold night air. Our players were a real credit to the club on the night but moreover to themselves as they played for each other. Thankfully our goalkeeper is doing fine but sporting a new plaster cast on his leg and we wish him and the young lad from Corduff a speedy recovery. Maybe, on the night, it put it all into perspective. It was only a game after all and hopefully everybody will get to play again. Good luck to Corduff in the final and we applaud our U15 squad for their endeavours this year.
Our U13 and U17 teams will take to the field on Saturday in their respective championship games. Seans na Mullai face Latton at 1.30pm and the U13’s face Eire Og at 11am. Both games are in Smithboro. Please come and support our players.
