Ulster Junior Club Championship

Our Ulster campaign took us to Clones on Saturday, where we took on Fr. Rocks of Cookstown. The build up to the game was quite tense as our last venture into Ulster was nearly twenty years previous. However, from the throw in, the game plan was enforced and proved to be effective. In what seemed like seconds, we had a goal and point registered without any response. We tagged on another two points but couldn’t quite get a rhythm going and the visitors entered their purple patch. Having scored a couple frees, Fr. Rocks, were awarded a penalty and duly converted it. Another point before the break would have them leading as half time was called. The game was slowly developing into a tinder box which just waiting to explode. A lot of unnecessary fouling and confrontations were diminishing the spectacle of football that it should have been. Once again , the Seans, started well in the second period by blundering the oppositions goal. Firstly a penalty and then a brace of points had us in the lead by four after five minutes. Our tails were up and we would not release the strangle hold on the lead for the rest of the game. Frustration from the Fr. Rocks, quickly descended into poor discipline which inevitably resulted in a flurry of red cards. Not the prettiest way to end the game but as we thought the game was dormant of any further surprises, a flowing move that started well in our own half , suddenly emerged on the oppositions twenty one yard line. With a quick hand pass and a wee shimmy, Eamon McQuillan was calmness personified, as he slotted the ball, one on one , passed the FR. Rocks goalkeeper. Not famed for scoring goals, in an illustrious career, but Eamon’s score sealed the deal. We had kept the opposition to two scores in the second half and we were victorious by eight points. A really excellent display of restraint, hard work and extreme pride in the jersey by all concerned. We now head for Crossmaglen on Sunday at 1.30pm. We take on the Armagh Champions, Belleeks, St. Laurence O’Tooles. Our adventure continues and we will enjoy every minute of it, but make sure you are a part of it.
