Junior Football League
It was derby day on Saturday last with the visit of Aghabog for round 4 of the league. Always a popular fixture for the locals and even more so with the visitors being table toppers. This was a tough, uncompromising encounter from the off. Neither side was without mistakes in handling and distribution but both teams converted their changes score for score except for a superb penalty save from Ryan Connolly early on. Nothing between them in the first half of possessions and turnovers but Aghabog had the single point advantage. The second half told the tale, while we pushed up, scores were scarce, and the visitors were soon two in front. A red card added to our woes and throw in one or two injury substitutions, and we were on the back foot. However, a much improved effort and resilience brought the affair level on twenty eight minutes, but a close in free for Aghabog well into injury time would settle the tie by a single score. Hindsight would suggest nothing between either side in the overall performance, but with only fourteen on the pitch for most of the second half and the subs bench emptied, I’d say we are improving with every game.
Minors
Another big fixture on Tuesday night, had neighbours Aghabog, visiting for round six of the league. A bright start had the Seans controlling the game well and breaking the lines for scores. On another day we may have had more consideration for frees within the frontline of attack, but that said we were four points in front at the break. A few positional changes by the visitors at the break rejuvenated their attack and our lead quickly disappeared. Our efforts continued but we only mustered three points for the second half. This was not enough and Aghabog cruised in the final minutes to a six point win. The return of players to the squad this week should lift the spirits and maybe add the depth needed for the fifteen aside encounters.
